Message from the Center’s Director
The Photon Valley Center was established in April 2017 as an internal organization of the Hamamatsu Agency for Innovation. The Photon Valley Center aims to use the advanced knowledge accumulated in the region, from photonics technology to electronics technology and information technology. By doing this, the center endeavors to promote advancement, improvement of productivity, and horizontal development of established industries, such as manufacturing, distribution, agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, as well as to cultivate new businesses and industries.
For this reason, we launched the A-SAP Industry-Academia-Government-Finance Collaborative Innovation Promotion Project in 2018 and have worked on it intensively. In this project, industry, academia, government, and finance work together as a project team to support companies, with universities at the center.
The center will continue to work with local people to play a crucial role in the revitalization of the region as managers and planners who contribute to research and development as well as human resources development at regional companies by linking the knowledge accumulated by regional universities, research institutes, and companies in various industries, thereby creating a network that is a world-class hub.

Shizuoka University, Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, the Graduate School for the Creation of New Photonics Industries, and Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. signed the Photonics Declaration in Hamamatsu to make Hamamatsu a preeminent photonics city.

Why photonics and electronics technologies?
The industries related to photonics and electronics technologies have accumulated in western Shizuoka Prefecture, with the Hamamatsu area at the center, for about 100 years based on an invention of Dr. Kenjiro Takayanagi (later a professor at Shizuoka University), who projected the character “イ” on a television for the first time in the world. Their activities have continued to be passed down to global companies with advanced photonics and electronics technologies that have supported the winning of a Nobel Prize and to universities and other research bodies that conduct research on photonics and electronics technologies, as well as to ventures originating from universities with the theme of photonics and electronics technologies. In June 2013, four organizations, Shizuoka University, Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, the Graduate School for the Creation of New Photonics Industries, and Hamamatsu Photonics K.K., announced the Photonics Declaration 2013 in Hamamatsu. This declaration presents a vision of growth into a region where new optical science and optical industries are created through the fusion and development of photonics and electronics technologies with conventional technologies.
At present, innovations are expected in the western Shizuoka Prefecture–leading transport equipment industry with the transition to next-generation automobiles as represented by CASE vehicles. Photonics and electronics technologies have transformed the way the region carries out manufacturing, one of its core strengths, with automatic selection, failure analysis, and microanalysis with sensors and light sources, fine processing with laser technologies, and no-contact processing. As optical sensing and communication technologies, such as the Internet of things, develop further, they will be integrated into more and more objects. Photonics and electronics technologies can play outstanding roles in a myriad of fields.
